An animal trainer in the Miami County Circus in Peru, IN retired from the circus. Upon retirement, the trainer took the many animals he owned and placed them in a single barn. Not only were tigers kept in this barn, but also lions, horses, and an elephant. The horses had the stables, the elephant had one half of the barn, and the big cats were confined to circus cages in an area in front of the stables. The lions’ manes were matted from sitting in their urine and feces for such a long time. After 9 years in that barn, the animals were rescued. Upon arrival in 2010 at the Rescue Center, Zeus and his brother, Thor, could barely walk and were very weary of the small shovels we use to scoop poop. Years later though, one of Zeus’ favorite things to do is run! He loves to run with keepers and volunteers along his fence line. Unfortunately, Zeus lost his brother a couple of years ago due to age related health issues, but Zeus has been able to keep a strong bond with his keepers. Zeus also loves to lay out in the sun and rub his tummy, but you have to be careful watching him too long as he will let you know when it is time to move on.
