INTERNSHIPS

EFRC offers structured unpaid internships for students in college or recently out of college. Participate in our program that gives interns an opportunity to learn firsthand the many aspects of exotic animal care.

Internships are only during the summer months and require a minimum of 8 weeks commitment. Deadline for applications is late April, but will be closed if positions fill before then.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This program does not include direct contact with any adult cat.
There are no exceptions to this policy.
Safety of the animals and the staff must always come first over personal need.

INTERNSHIP PREREQUISITES

Interns must be at least 18 years old.

  • Due to the vulnerability of our cats to COVID 19, all interns will be required to show proof of full vaccination.

  • Interns must send a resume and schedule a working interview.

    • Working Interviews are over two consecutive weekdays (Tuesdays and Wednesdays only at this time).

  • Interns must be capable of lifting up to 60 pounds and be in good health.

  • Applicants working towards or having a degree in Zoology, Biology or related field is preferred, but not required.

  • We are looking for individuals who are hardworking, dedicated and self motivating.

  • If the internship is for credit, you must fulfill the requirements of your school.

    • You must arrange for the school and the EFRC to communicate.

    • You also must provide the EFRC with all of the information needed to help you fulfill your requirements.

    • Indiana University Students: We are associated with the Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior program.

INTERN DUTIES

Intern schedules are one of the following, but can be individualized. Day length varies but is typically from 8:30am-5:00pm. Internship is unpaid.

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday or Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday

  • All interns will undergo training on OSHA and EFRC safety procedures.

  • All interns will be trained and involved in Public Education including greeting tourists at the gate, selling and tracking merchandise, daily public tours, and other educational programs and special events.

  • All interns will be involved in food preparation, feeding, cleaning, as well as possibly; maintenance of the enclosures and grounds, construction and veterinary care.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES (FOR INTERNSHIP INTERVIEWS AND INTERNSHIPS)

Travel Arrangements to and from the Rescue Center

  • We are a small facility that is in a very rural area so most rideshare services/taxis do not come to the area.

  • Appropriate clothing, foot wear, and weather related items

    • Clothing should be worn that you don’t mind getting dirty or worn out.

    • Pants (not shorts) are recommended due to vegetation, insects, and the work in general.

    • Temperature and weather conditions should be taken into account with clothing selections.

    • Sunscreen, rain gear, and bug spray would also be recommended.

  • Your own housing (EFRC will try to assist you in trying to locate housing close to the center, if possible. No housing stipend is available)
