We have been working this year with an amazingly talented artist from Indianapolis-Taylored Illustration. She considers herself a Fine Artist & Illustrator. Her bright/exaggerated use of color also makes her an Expressionist painter, but the paintings are so also very realistic. Her watercolors were recently awarded the badge of the Indiana Artisan, which is a huge, amazing honor and makes this watercolor very exclusive. She reached out wanting a way to help the cats and we have been so eager to work with local artists and small businesses. She did an amazing job of capturing Zeus’s personality and beauty in this picture. Zeus is a big lion boy and spends a lot of his days sunbathing, so the image of Zeus for a lot of people is him horizontal-that is why his painting is of him laying down. Zeus’s story is also one of the most heartbreaking. He was kept in a barn by his retired circus trainer owner for almost a decade with 9 other big cats and an elephant. The big cats were kept in their circus cages which only provide enough room to turn in a circle. Atrophy of his muscles meant that Zeus could not run or walk very well when he first got here (2010), but now (not counting his naps in the sun) he can move pretty fast when he gets to playing.
This painting is the first of many that Taylor is going to be doing of the furry residents of the EFRC, with her next target being Majae, our black leopard.
